Category: Medical Surgical Nursing After surgery there is a delay in return to normal bowel function. Generally there is gastric stasis for < 24 hours, small bowel ileum for 2-3 days and a colonic ileum for 4-5 days. Usually, patients have oral intake withheld until passage of flatus.
